Maravich - A Glimpse of Greatness

by Pistol Pete Maravich Fan: Rick Houston

We had just finished our last game of JV basketball in March of 1972 at South Rowan High School in China Grove, N.C.  Our coach said that if we wanted to have a chance to play basketball on the varsity level, we better work on our game throughout the summer and go to a basketball camp if possible.  As soon as I got home, I opened the Salisbury Post and as usual went straight for the sports page.  The first thing that I saw was an advertisement for a basketball camp at Campbell College in Buies Creek, N.C.  The ad called it the best camp in the country with famous coaches and players that would be the instructors and counselors.  The list included John Wooden and Press Maravich as the top 2 coaches, and Tom McMillan, George Leman and many other famous ACC players.  Then, I saw it.  The last part of the ad said that Pete Maravich would put on a clinic for the campers on Friday.

Pete Maravich Stats ~ 44.2 NCAA College Basketball Points Per Game

Pistol Pete Maravich
Not before or after Pistol Pete Maravich, has anyone in NCAA College Basketball ever come close to matching Pete’s staggering 44.2 points per game average amassed during his three seasons with the LSU Tigers. Keep in mind that Pete Maravich played for LSU in 1968-1970 which was well before the NCAA’s nationally adopted 19’ 9” three point shot. Some experts have estimated that if the 3 point rule had been in effect, Pete’s per game average would have been in the mid 50’s range.

Pete Maravich also holds the title as the NCAA Division I College Basketball leading scorer with 3,667 career points in just three seasons. NCAA Division II goes to Travis Grant of Kentucky State with 4,045 career points who also had a 33.4 points per game average. The NAIA School record goes to John Pierce who amassed 4,230 points in his career at David Lipscomb University.

Pistol Pete Bio

Pistol Pete Maravich - LSU 23
Pete "Press" Maravich instilled in his son, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, a love for the game of basketball that carried throughout his life. Press, a naval aviator and former professional basketball player turned coach, began showing Pete the fundamentals of the game when Pete was seven years old. Together, father and son devised creative and fun ways to help Pete master the fundamental skills needed to excel in basketball. Named everything from around the world and the space clap to the scrambled egg and the flap jack, these drills improved Pete's quickness and hand-eye coordination while strengthening his self-confidence. Pete was obsessive about improving his skills, spending hours upon hours practicing shooting, ball handling, dribbling, and passing in an old gym. Press went to great lengths to keep the drills interesting for his son - even going so far as to drive his car at varying speeds while Pete leaned out the passenger window, trying to control the ball he was dribbling!
